Brunei Darussalam is a tiny country, as well as being an unusual one. On my travels I always sample local food, it’s a key ingredient of a visit to any country in my opinion. Brunei offers a few local dishes for dinner, but for afternoon coffee I opted to try the local Brunei Cheesecake. So today’s Friday’s Featured Food comes from Bandar Seri Begawan, as I headed to the waterfront to try the Brunei Cheesecake at Dermaga Cafe.
This had an added bonus for me as I was able to use the internet for the first time in Brunei – they have free Wi-Fi so that alone makes the Dermaga Cafe worth a visit.
Brunei is generally pricier than its Borneo neighbours Malaysia and Indonesia and this coffee shop is not an exception. I paid $2 Brunei Dollars for an iced coffee and the Brunei Cheesecake cost me $3. Worth it for a one-off treat!
So my Brunei Cheesecake arrived. Looking slightly more elegant than your average cheesecake and with a napkin reading Royal Brunei Catering, I sample the cheesecake.
White, yellow and blue in colour, creamy and sweet in texture it was a bit of a special dessert! The blue came in the form of an iced sugar wedge on top and sat on the cheesecake accompanied by a small chunk of peanut butter. The Brunei Cheesecake sits on a gold coloured shiny piece of cardboard. Admiring the food before devouring it was an essential part of this particular culinary delight. I loved it!
So if you’re ever in Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei and you want to try the Brunei Cheesecake head to Dermaga Cafe on the waterfront. It’s unmissable – there are only a few cafes and restaurants along the seafront. And I’m also not sure if this is in any way a speciality of Brunei at all – I’d actually assume it’s not, but it was nice and surely you can only get Brunei Cheesecake in Brunei…
