Friday’s Featured Food: Cheeseburger, Chips, Cola and Ice Cream in Kudu Fast Food Joint in Shaqra, Saudi Arabia

While backpacking in Saudi Arabia, we toured the old mud city of Shaqra. These days there is a main museum there (which we had a guided tour of) and the old walled city which has nobody living in It, but is open to walk around. It was an unusual adventure. I was on tour with Young Pioneer Tours and representing them at the Hotel Show in Jeddah.

That day, we were given a packed lunch by our local tour group, Haya Tours. However, we got hungry for some hot food just minutes after the tour in Shaqra and so we headed downtown with our local Saudi Arabian guys to a restaurant…

Of course I expected a Saudi Arabian style lunch in a traditional restaurant, just like we had previously in Jeddah, Hai’l, Ta’if and Riyadh. Imagine the surprise when we pull up in a car park next to a Saudi Arabian take on an American fast food venue! This place looked, felt and smelt like a DickMonalds or a Burglar Queen. Because that’s exactly what it was!! Welcome to Kudu, the Saudi Arabian DickMonalds!!

We looked at the menu and my choice was easy. I chose their generic burger option. In other words, the equivalent of a Big Mac (in DickMonalds) or a Whopper ( in Burglar Queen).

The cheeseburger came with chips and a cola. Served on a tray.

After munching the main meal, most of us were still hungry. So ice creams it was!

The venue even had free Wi-Fi and as the only customers, the staff even came over to snap selfies with us…
