When backpacking 🎒 in The Maldives, swankaday resorts often serve up textbook global buffets and the streets of Male have a wide range of Indian, Chinese and Italian restaurants. But I just needed to try something local and preferably an interesting fish or seafood dish. I mean The Maldives is world famous for ice blue waters, turquoise bays, coral reefs, snorkeling, sea life and deep sea diving. We are sea loyal at The Maldives away. In fact, when you land at the airport in The Maldives, you are on the island of Hulhule and the airport is Velana. More fake news that you land into Male – you don’t. But you are 10 metres from the water when exiting the airport!

I was backpacking along Majeedhee Magu Road in Male, the capital city when I saw an advert for a Maldivian Breakfast in a textbook corner restaurant that just looked local. Majeedhee Magu Road seems to be the main street in the whole country, it’s like their Oxford Street. I wasn’t hungry that afternoon so I footmarked it for a return the next day, the next morning. I slept in a few different places in The Maldives including Napcorner and Wind Stay.

Next morning I was up fresh and ready for my Maldivian breakfast! They have two types.
1.All You Can Eat Maldivian buffet for 55 Rufiyaa (about £2.70).
2.A Maldivian Breakfast for 50 Rufiyaa (about £2.50).

I was here on Friday morning so actually only the second option was available as it’s a holiday here. This was perfect anyway as it’s a set meal, I’ve a small stomach, I wouldn’t have eaten much at a buffet and I still saved 20 pence! Epic.

There were two guys working and a pretty waitress called Mandu. She was from Nepal. I knew what to order, I’m decisive and fast like that – “One Maldivian breakfast please love”! She brought me a water and the meal fairly quickly. The water was an extra 40 pence and I don’t normally pay for water, I usually just top up my bottle as I go. But it was a hot day and I gathered a total of 1 litre of water for my backpack would be better than the 500 ml I currently had. Plus Mandu had taken time to explain the dish to me. I’m not always the budget tight cheapskate, by now, she was getting a tip here.

My meal comprised of 4 parts and is generally a typical Maldivian Breakfast.
1.A hard boiled egg 🥚🍳.
2.Four Roti, which she called “Roshi” here in the Maldives. It tasted like a mix of Roti or Naan bread, but then again I’m no foodie, and no food expert.
3.A chicken sausage. These are common in The Maldives. I had them a few times. There’s no pork here in The Maldives, a strict Muslim country. Sausages are usually chicken, sometimes beef.
4.Mashuni. Now this part was the treat! Mashuni came in a dish and it is local fish🐟 mixed with onions🌰 , coconut 🥥 and spice🌶. It looked good; it tasted even better!

I tried a bit of each part separately but then saw a local lady wrapping them so I copied her idea. I sliced the egg and sausage into 4 parts and wrapped them in the roshi. It was delicious!

I especially loved the Mashuni part, my first time to ever try that.

My bill was split in the following ways –
1 x Maldivian Breakfast Mashuni – 50 Rufiyaa (under £3)
1 × Water bottle – 7 Rufiyaa (40 pence)
Service Charge – 5.70.
Tax – 5.02.
Total – 67.72 Rufiyaa ($4.5 US Dollars / £3.80 Northern Irish pounds).

And I only had 2 sips of the water so I took the bottle away. A brilliant breakfast! Nice work, The Maldives. Just splendid!
