Friday’s Featured Food: Tequila Ice Cream in Oaxaca de Juarez
The Mexicans are great at food and quirky appetite quenching ideas. Hats (or sombreros) off to them for that. I’ve been backpacking in Mexico recently and visited places like Mexico City, Teotihuacan, Oaxaca, Monte Alban and San Cristobal de las Casas. Food and drink wise, it’s been overwhelming! I could write about 20 Friday’s Featured Foods on Mexico alone (sadly I just don’t have the time!). But here’s a cool one for today.
Ice cream range in Chonita, Oaxaca, Mexico
While in the trendy city of Oaxaca de Juarez we visited about 5-6 markets (mercados). They have lots of them. Once inside the indoor complex known as Mercado Benito Juarez, I noticed an ice cream stall selling a range of ice creams ranging from tuna to tequila to peach. I went for the alcoholic option: Tequila Ice Cream.

We found a stall called Chonita and it was selling 26 quirky flavours of ice cream! I was straight in there on a hot day to try the Tequila Ice Cream.
I’ll have Tequila please!
For a cost of just 22Mexican Pesos ($1.5 USD) I got two scoops of Tequila Ice Cream. Nothing more to report than it was absolutely thirsty quenching, delicious and tasted completely like what Tequila ice cream should taste like.

Can you get drunk on it?
No, not really – the ice obviously waters the whole thing down but you do of course taste the tequila and some of the alcohol is obvious.

If you are ever in Mexico, or indeed Oaxaca de Juarez, head to the Mercado Benito Juarez and try the Tequila ice cream. You can also buy it from street stalls near the Basilica, Zocalo and Plaza San Domingo.
