I was out in West Africa (Senegal and The Gambia) on a challenge with MoneySupermarket.com recently and it was such an awesome adventure, I can’t wait to write more about it. You may have already read my introduction post about it and followed my journey from Dean Court to Dakar, either on here, on my Facebook page or Instagram Feed. I was trying to cope without any luggage. Thankfully, to kick off my journey, I booked into the Maison Abaka. Maison Abaka is right by N’Gor beach in Dakar, Senegal.

Without a laptop or any luggage on this trip, I had to occupy myself in other ways as well as relaxing and sightseeing. After my crazy trip from Dean Court to Dakar, it was on the morning of Day 2 that I arrived in the Senegalese capital city. To start the trip, I wanted a nice beach location close to the airport, away from Central Dakar (where I would end my trip) so I looked no further than the excellent Maison Abaka. Host Isabelle welcomed me to Maison Abaka and I loved this place.

The photos will do it justice, it’s a bit of a paradise!

Here are five reasons why I loved Maison Abaka:

1.Tranquil Paradise
Dakar’s downtown streets can get busy and intimidating, so to escape all this, I wanted a beach resort to start of my trip with ease. It totally felt like a tranquil and tropical paradise here.

I spent my first two days in Senegal by the beach, beers for sunset and chilling out. Nothing chaotic at all, I loved it.

2.Location in N’gor Village
Location wise, there are a lot of bonuses by staying at Maison Abaka, it is situated in N’Gor rather than the main part of Dakar. N’gor is a Lebo village that means “worthy man”in Woloff, local language. Maison Abaka is located to the north of the Cape Verte peninsula, 10 kms from central Dakar, 7 kms from the Soumbedioune market and handicraft market. It is an intriguing, traditional and popular village just opposite the island of N’gor.

The main point I wanted to say is that Maison Abaka is only about 10 minutes drive from the main international airport and a taxi should only cost 4-5 Euros to there, I got it even cheaper on a taxi share.

Ngor is also the best known location to see big game fishermen returning with their catch of marlin, sailfish and dolphin fish. It’s also popular with surfers and divers and there is a dive school as part of Maison Abaka’s ground floor. The fish on the beach was superb.

To go sightseeing further, N’gor is 40 kms from the Village of Tortoises and the Lac Rose, which you can read all about here.

3.N’Gor Beach is RIGHT HERE!
The Maison Abaka sits right on N’Gor Beach! It’s a zero minute walk, and this is the only sandy beach in the area. There are bars and restaurants nearby, boats across to the island and locals playing football all day long. It was brilliant.

4.My Cosy Room
Of course after a long trip to Senegal via Gatwick (England), Ataturk (Turkey) and a brief stop in Mauritania, I needed a short sleep to revitalise before heading to the beach. My room was so cosy, and even better it was green.

As a tourist without luggage, getting a bed, soap, hot water and a towel was brilliant. I also had a mosquito net which was handy as I had zero insect repellent on days 1 and 2.

5.Balcony Bar
The balcony bar is a perfect hang out zone for sunset beers, evening cocktails and breakfast. I enjoyed it all three times and loved this hangout. Yes, I missed having my laptop, but there are resident dogs, cats, birds and monkeys here to keep you occupied.
