My first day in Bulgaria ended up being a massive backpacking adventure. I kind of assumed loads of travellers would be heading the same way, as I went from Romania’s capital across the border into Bulgaria. Alas – no – it was just myself and Mina, a Turkish girl who I met on the train as we shared a carriage. Mina was heading to Varna and I was heading to Veliko Tarnovo. There was only one day train that day from Bucharest Romania, so we were the only two to take that route across the border.
This meant by 7 pm I was alone and stranded in Gorna Oryakhovitsa, a nothing town in the middle of nowhere. Except I had decided to book into a cosy looking family hotel for the night in the medieval city of Veliko Tarnovo and so I jumped on the 19.10 pm train from Gorna to Veliko Tarnovo. A cosy train journey and a welcome to Bulgaria all alone – dark and misty. Then I arrived by darkness in the poorly lit train station at Veliko Tarnovo.
A backpacking jaunt all alone up the hills to the old town of VT and I found my hotel – the Family Hotel Comfort, one of the best hotels Veliko Tarnovo has to offer. All was well as I had a cosy base for a couple of nights while exploring Veliko Tarnovo and Tsarevets Fortress. After a long day of constant travel, this was the most comfortable and welcoming place I could have picked. Here are 6 reasons why I loved the Hotel Comfort!
1. Views
At night I could see the sparkling church inside Tsarevets Fortress. In the morning a stunning eerie mist surrounded the fortress. I had a bedroom at the front. The views are superb. It was just incredible.
2. Good Beds
Ask the owner Antonio what time i woke up at both days (well actually I woke up at 8am, but lay in bed until 10am both days!!). The longest lie in I have had in weeks or months. Just because the bed and room was so cosy!!
3. Friendly, Sincere Owner
Antonio the owner is a really top man. He is a friendly, welcoming guy who works hard to make this hotel one of the cleanest and best run family hotels in the area. He’s always around for a chat and some travel advice. Plus he has lived in the USA before so his English is excellent!
4. Fast Wi-Fi
I was sat overlooking the glorious Tsarevets Fortress blogging away – the wifi is fast here which was brilliant!
5. Great Location
Situated in the heart of the poky, upward leaning cobbled streets of Veliko Tarnovo, this place is rural village Bulgaria to the core. Not just that, it’s a short walk downhill to all the places you need to see. The Tsarevets Fortress is less than 20 minutes walk, as are the museums, restaurants and churches in Veliko Tarnovo. Check out some of my photos – this is a beautiful town.
6. Warm Rooms
Winters in the mountains of Eastern Europe get cold. Antonio knows the score. He has boilers fitted to perfection to the point where you could have a sauna if you wanted. Yes there is great heat here to be had but use it sparingly remember – it don’t come cheap for the owners.
