Since 2015, I have been using Ibis Hotels as one of my consistent brands to stay in. I have so far stayed in their hotels in Poland, Kaliningrad, Kuwait, France and Bahrain. Next it was the turn of the Cote d’Ivoire or the Ivory Coast. I was backpacking in Abidjan and Grand Bassam after getting an evisa online which I got on arrival at the airport. There are two Ibis Hotels here in Abidjan. I chose the one in the Plateau area near the main Cathedral and Mosque. The other Abidjan Ibis Hotel is in Marcory.
I applied for an evisa for the Ivory Coast and received it on arrival at the international airport. Then I headed to my trusty Ibis to check in. It was weird to me that this Ibis was the dearest so far. People who haven’t backpacked Africa assume it to be cheaper than Europe. But in some instances it’s just not true. An Ibis Hotel in a European capital can be from $50 USD. Here in Abidjan you are looking at $100 USD. But I wanted it and needed it. I like a good mix of luxury and budget in my lifestyle and sometimes in Africa I just want a decent safe and cosy hotel. With mental health and depression kicking in (caused by liars and stalkers), I don’t care for slumming it anymore – I just want a safe and healthy room. Once checking in to the Ibis Plateau in Abidjan, Ivory Coast these are the aspects of my stay I most enjoyed.
1.AYCE Breakfast
Not every booking will include the All You Can Eat breakfast but I got a good deal that included my breakfast.
Breakfast was a true feast. All of this and more:
– tea and coffee
– juice
– water
– milk
– croissants, pastries
– bread
– jam and butter
– yoghurt
– fruit
– cereals
– salad
– eggs
– beans
– sausages
2.Fast Wi-Fi Throughout
As a Wi-Fi geek and email checking freak, you never know what you will get in Africa. This Ibis Hotel had fast Wi-Fi On all floors.
3.Cosy Rooms
Despite having visited Africa 6 times now, sometimes the dirt and hygiene levels take their toll. The backpacking snob in me requires a comfy clean bed once in a while, or what is fast becoming twice or thrice in a while. I was in Room 306. I didn’t have much of a view out my window but didn’t care too much. The room was warm and cosy.
4.Great Security
In my experience, Africa poses more dangers than the other continents for the everyday security and well being. Its nice to know the security here is 24hour and strict every bag, coat, wallet r person is screened on the way in. It’s the same system as when boarding a flight. In such circumstances you naturally feel more safe. Each room also has a safe in it.
5.Location
Abidjan is huge and a city based across stretches of water so there can be no perfect location. However the Ibis Plateau Hotel is a good option for those on business or short on time for sightseeing. The reason being that there are four key sights fairly walkable from here. These sights:
St. Paul’s Cathedral
Central Mosque
National Assembly

hi there, nice article sharing. A quick question, do you request their shuttle service to pick you from the airport? i am about to visit the Abidjan and wondering how to get to the town other than taxi from airport.
Hi David, I was picked up by Williams Dayo from the tour company I toured with. I recommend them – Safe travels. Jonny
