Random travel moments spring up extra surprises, and I love them especially when there is a FREE attraction to see. What the duck was I doing walking around the seafront in Tsim Sha Tsui in Hong Kong? Was I quackers?
I was looking at a massive floating duck, that’s what!! Are you serious?? How is a massive floating duck an “attraction”? I’m not quite sure of that myself, but what I do know is that in the last few weeks, thousands of locals and tourists have flocked to Tsim Sha Tsui just to see this duck and get their photo taken beside it!!
So I did the same, I backpacked my way through the crowds, girlfriend in hand and stared at a massive duck.
The duck is a publicity stunt and was paid for by Harbour City Shopping Centre. It’s FREE to visit and take photos of the floating duck. They figured that attracting a load of people to the area in Springtime to snap the duck would bring in extra customers to the shopping centre and they’d make the money back. I dare say their right.
There are even mini ducks in and around the area and some clever business men and women have set up stands selling miniature ducks!
So if you’re in Tsim Sha Tsui, head to the seafront and see the “big duck”, it won’t be there for long and it’s a random FREE attraction!
OK so next you’re going to ask what on earth is Jonny Blair – backpacker, nomad and travel freak doing wearing a shirt and tie while “backpacking” in Tsim Sha Tsui. So I came straight from working as a teacher in a local Primary School to see the duck! Don’t forget to keep teaching English in Hong Kong as an option on your travels, you never know what random inflatable animals you will meet…
Two videos I made at the Big Floating Duck in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong:
Sometimes you just have to say, Duck it! and go with the herd.
I’d pay to drive something like that. 😀

A good PR publicity stunt Maria. Unless the thing sinks, it’s hardly ever gonna attract bad publicity is it? You wont believe I had to fight through a crowd of people just to get my photos taken beside it!
