Hungary and Budapest in particular are for many the birthplace of paprika and palinka, the beautiful Danube, one of the most impressive parliament buildings, baths, and cool parties. Here we have compiled a list of places that only natives know about and where they go, try at least one of them and share your impressions.

Visit the Garden of Philosophers

To do this, climb the hill near the Elizabeth Bridge (white bridge), and you will see the city at a glance. The most wonderful thing is that the hill is located just between such tourist Citadella and Buda Castle, only on it, besides you, there will be no more than ten people. This is a great spot for a mini picnic or just relaxing. Hungarians here walk with children, read books or do yoga. But why is it the Garden of the Philosophers? Because it is here that there are sculptures of all the greatest thinkers and preachers (Jesus, Buddha, Gandhi) and all together they call for mutual understanding.

Ride on a Boat

Now you are probably disappointed in the article and thought that you have not heard anything more touristy. No, we’ll just tell you how to do it cheaply and avoid any intrusive service. The so-called water tram is also included in the public transport system of Budapest. What is its beauty? Yes, in the fact that you will see all the sights on the banks of the Danube (castle, universities, parliament, Fisherman’s Bastion) with a breeze for a penny. You can take a snack and a drink on board, and then get off at any stop convenient for you. Please note that a ticket for one river trip is cheaper than a metro/tram ticket. Even if you have a monthly pass, you still have to buy a separate ticket for the river tram on the weekend (Ft 170 = €0.5).

Get on Skates

Did you know that the largest open-air skating rink in Europe is open in Budapest every year from November to February? It first began work in 1870, but now it has been reconstructed, and it is a pleasure to ride it. Here the music is pouring and mulled wine is poured, and the skates will be sharpened if you come with your own. In the evenings, there is usually a large influx of people, but there is no flea market. Please note that you need to buy two separate tickets: entrance to the rink and skate rental. The price of skates is fixed – €2-3 per hour, but the entrance for the day (there is no hourly option) can vary from €2.5 to €6 depending on the day.

Conquer Normafa

Normafa is considered one of the greenest areas in Budapest and the surrounding area, it is a park area in the hilly part of the city. Residents of the capital like to get here at any time of the year away from the noise, climb up the hill and enjoy the view from a height of almost 500 m. There are several ways to climb: through the thick of trees or along specially prepared steps – choose the option that you prefer and suits your fitness level.

And, of course, all the locals, just like you, love to travel! Budapest can be a good start for your trip, look at the websites of low-cost airlines, and you will find good prices and interesting destinations. Believe us, paying €50 round trip is considered expensive here.
