My Birthday Stay at the Kaiser Hotel, Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia

My arrival into Ulaan Baatar in March 2017 in time to “celebrate” my birthday here in a new city and a new country is the biggest surprise in my travel life since my Afghanistan tour in 2016. I didn’t expect to be here, I had lost all passion for long term whackpacking, backpacking and sightseeing. I just wanted to explore Poland and that was it. But I had forgotten to tie up the loose ends from my past. No time was the right time, but this was no time.

Getting a last minute Mongolian visa in Warsaw, Poland was tricky but I managed it, before heading to Bournemouth for a wedding. It was all last minute and my travel diary proved I would tour 7 countries in 9 days, old school tourism by me without the perpetual smile. Poland – England – India – Hong Kong – Mongolia – Kyrgyzstan – Turkey.

The Hotel was a warm welcome to Mongolia and here is why I felt at ease and calm here. I also managed somehow to concoct a “baatpacking” top 10 sights. Flush your toilet, kids. We are bereft of excrement here!

1.Birthday Treat – Beers and Note
On arrival at the hotel, into my room and they had left me an unforgettable birthday note with 4 birthday beers. I have travelled far and wide, long and short for over 12 years now and yet I am always surprised. It was sad that I had nowhere to properly post this update widespread anymore, as DSL lost its Facebook (in the wake of the liar scandal) and my latest platform was Poland only. I still Tweeted the whole event though.

Still, I managed to let my Twitter followers know that I was here in Ulaan Baatar and the Kaiser Hotel had treated me. It was momentary bliss. The smile was almost as genuine as Nicky Wire’s or the hyena’s from “So Why So Sad”.

2.Easy Airport Pick Ups
Despite the fact that Mongolia is cheap, it is also remote and of course the airport isn’t in the city of Ulaan Baatar, some 15 kilometres outside. With irregular and unreliable buses hardly recommended, the hotel does an airport pick up. $20 US would have been steep for me a few years back, but now I’m OK with it. I’m tired and weary, I’m lost and lonely, I’m depressed and baffled. I’ll pay it if it keeps me alive.

3.Free Wi-Fi All Around
Yes I was updating this from Twitter and also checking emails here from my hotel room. Free Wi-Fi at the Kaiser Hotel was a big selling point for me with potential offline issues in Mongolia. And yes, with football a part of my “whackpacker’s diet” I longed to watch the Cherries and the wee Glens from the comfort of my hotel room. Bang bang, we did it.

4.Complimentary Breakfast
Despite the fact the Hotel boasts a swankaday decent restaurant, the breakfast was served daily to my room. On my last day I hope the reception girl wasn’t too put off by the fact that I answered the door naked and took my final breakfast in Mongolia.

5.Cosy Rooms
My room was on the third floor and very cosy. Having a whirlwind trip on my return back to Poland meant I was ready for a good rest.

As well as all of this, there is parking out the front, a bar and restaurant and this is a great place to stay. Life has been horrible since I met that liar who pretended to be my friend before becoming the first ever person on my journey to lie and refuse to send me the travel tips or sights on her town as promised. I have been suicidal every day for 10 months now, but here are some more photos from Mongolia.
