My Secret Travel Challenge Starts This Week in Africa: #MSMLostLuggage

Just as I try to slow my travels down, I have possibly two of the craziest journeys coming up in May and June 2016. In May, I am off to Africa on a crazy challenge with MoneySupermarket.com. They are sending me to a secret location (which I’ll reveal on the 5th May 2016) without ANY LUGGAGE. It’s part of the #MSMLostLuggage challenge, you can read about the lost luggage challenge here.

Off to Africa with Money Supermarket.com
I’ll be heading to Gatwick Airport in London where the Yotel Compact Hotel is and I will be travelling without my much loved Osprey Aether Rucksack and without my 30 country deep Mindshift Gear hand luggage backpack. I will only have the clothes I’m wearing, pen and paper, my passport, my wallet and a clever phone (so no laptop!). I’ll probably bring my travelling Northern Ireland flag too but that will be it. It’s going to be an odd and crazy 10 days in Africa!

In the past fellow travel bloggers like Becki Enright (Borders of Adventure) and Kash Battacharya (Budget Traveller) have been on this challenge before – now it’s my turn! I’m looking forward to my fourth trip to Africa, and my seventh country on this huge continent, my least travelled part of the world.

Here are five clues to the location of the country I’m heading to:

1.They have qualified for the FIFA World Cup once before.
2.I have never been to this country before (you can view my travel destinations here).
3.A singer from this country had a UK number one single in the mid-1990s.
4.The country borders five other African countries.
5.This country has a whopping 7 UNESCO World Heritage Sites!

I’ll reveal the country and city tonight. I can’t wait! #MSMLostLuggage

  • Hi Ray, that’s a good question. I could have asked them to pick one from a list. We settled on Africa together, then I narrowed down a few options, ran it by the company and together we both ended up with the same place. It kind of just worked out, rather than me picking it or them picking it. Does that make any sense? I’m excited, but really really this trip and France for a month will be the last crazy travels for a while. Really, I mean it! Safe travels. Jonny

  • That totally makes sense. Glad to hear they compromised and allowed you to pick which country in Africa that you wanted to do this challenge in. Will be excited to see how this turns out for you!!

  • Hi Kathryn, thanks for the comment. It won’t be long until the destination is revealed and I am excited about it. It looks like you’ve been on some cool African adventures yourself, brilliant! Safe travels. Jonny

  • Hi Jonny! I hope you also visited Goree Island in Africa which is a beautiful destination in Africa for travelers and I hope you had completed your travel challenge as well but I think, this secret travel challenge would be better if you could also share your whole travel experience for this challenge.

  • Hi Steven are you joking me?? Of course Imentioned it. On this post, on many posts, on my blogs and on my social media. My challenge was to “backpack” without a backpack. The challenge was that I went to Africa for 12 days no NO LUGGAGE, hence the hashtag #msmlostluggage ! Safe travels, Jonny

  • Hi Polina, No I haven’t been there yet to Goree Island. I have backpacked Africa 10 times so far but it’s a huge continent so I normally only visit 2-3 countries per trip! Safe travels. Jonny
