“By a lonely prison wall, I heard a young girl calling” – Pete Saint John.
On a summer night as August 2025 came to a close, I embarked on yet another wild bar experience! It sio happened on the exact 18 year anniversary of this very travel blog, Don’t Stop Living. You know the drill, and if you don’t, even better…we are only young once.
“Eponymous” – R.E.M.
This one is up there with the best of them. What was even more fitting was that my experience was actually on a Thursday, therefore it is so perfect for my Thirsty Thursdays series! This experience fitted with some of my legendary bar stories from days gone by – The Monopoly Pub Crawl in London, the Ice Bar also in London, the world’s highest Irish Pub (in both Peru, and Bolivia), the Vodka Factory tour in Poland, the testtube bar in Saint Petersburg…and even the night I spent in a prison in Hitler’s town. Yes, really grim days.

My Night at Das Alte Gefängnis, Braunau Am Inn, Austria: Spending A Night in a Converted Hostel in Hitler’s Town
This time, I was going to be spending a night in the incredible Alcotraz – one of London’s newest and coolest bars and themed nights out. From the outside, you’ll never know what madness lies awaiting behind the entrance…it’s one of the most fun bars London has to offer…
So What is Alcotraz?
Named obviously after Alcatraz in the USA, it’s a cocktail bar in the UK, themed on that prison, even with USA flags inside, and actors with that American twang.
Alcotraz London is an immersive, theatrical cocktail bar cleverly disguised as a prison — or more precisely, a “bar behind bars”. It invites guests to slip into orange jumpsuits, smuggle their own booze past crooked guards, and enjoy bespoke cocktails served by inmate-mixologists—all framed within a playful bootlegging prison storyline. Your destiny will keep you warm…
Where is Alcotraz? How To Get To Alcotraz?
They have a few in the UK in locations –
I went to the London one, with my long time friend, the famous Millwall Neil. Located at 127 Hackney Road, London (Cell Block Two-One-Two).
It is very close to Hoxton Overground tube station…my journey there was via Victoria. It is easy to get to – use the orange Windrush Line. You can change at Whitechapel. Way on down south London town…
“Competition in other places, but the horns, they blowin that sound, way on down south. Way on down south, London town” – Dire Straits.
Preparing For Alcotraz
After getting it booked, I printed our tickets for Neil and I. You also have to fill in a short questionnaire beforehand and you can get a pre-prison document. It’s all very intriguing…
Just turn up ready for the adventure, and follow the rules on the booking form. Bring ID, and smuggle in some alcohol. Yes, really – you have to smuggle in alcohol pat the guard!
What to Expect Inside Alcotraz
I don’t want to give too much away, I want you to book it, go there and enjoy it without already knowing all the wild secrets. Book it, read the brief, don’t overthink it. But here are a few things to expect…
- Hidden behind unassuming shutters on Brick Lane lies a secret speakeasy prison cocktail bar. Successfully smuggle in your own liquor past The Warden for the “serving” inmates to make you delicious, personalised cocktails behind bars.
-
Interactive, Immersive Storytelling: Guests become part of an unfolding plot. Actors portray guards, inmates, and wardens; you’ll gather missions, perhaps join Clyde Cassidy’s bootlegging operation, and attempt to outsmart the warden.
-
BYOB with a Twist: You bring sealed liquor (recommended: ~700 ml for up to four people) and the venue provides all mixers and ingredients. The “inmates” then turn your contraband into four personalized cocktails each. If you don’t drink, expect expertly crafted mocktails.
- Inmates: You can meet others easily and talk to them. The Chinese girls, the Italians, Napoli and Maradona. Millwall Neil and I were chatty as ever, just like 2004…
-
Duration & Pricing: The experience lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes and is open Tuesday–Sunday (closed Mondays), with tickets typically ranging from £42–£66, depending on the day and add-ons like souvenirs or branded mugs.
-
Upgraded Venue: The current flagship on Hackney Road spans about 5,000 sq ft, includes three cell blocks, 30 individual cells, and seven secret rooms—tripling capacity to around 180 “inmates”.
Why It’s So Memorable
-
Immersive Experience Trend: Alcotraz exemplifies Britain’s move toward experiential hospitality—combining theatre and nightlife. People seek storytelling-driven venues, and Alcotraz delivers.
-
Highly-Rated & Frequently Booked: Reviews praise the liquidity (cocktails), actors, and immersive vibe. Tickets often sell out, especially for special occasions like date nights or birthdays.
-
Controversial Edge: Though beloved by many, Alcotraz has drawn criticism. Advocacy groups argue it trivializes incarceration and may be insensitive, though creators argue it’s purely fictional and theatrical.
Perfect For…
-
Date nights: A unique and playful setting where couples team up to outwit the warden—or play roles like “the Escape Artist.”
-
Celebrations: Great for birthdays, hen or stag parties, Christmas “convictions,” or team-building events.
-
Groups & Non-drinkers: Welcomes both drinkers and sober attendees. Alloying mocktails ensures everyone stays engaged and included.
And the Story Doesn’t End There…
