When planning such hikes, here are some of the aspects I had to consider time and time again.
Shoes and Insoles
It goes without saying that your footwear is vitally important when hiking – you need to feel comfy when you walk. So as well as good shoes, you’ll need decent insoles as well as good socks. I recommend that you keep your soles fresh and cosy by wearing great insoles on your feet. These can be regular insoles of course, but I find that football or soccer insoles are excellent and I love having that extra cushion on my feet when I backpack and hike. Plus it stops the feet going dry and the skin going hard. Try it!
A Decent Backpack
Since I started properly backpacking in 2003, I have owned over 20 different backpacks. Well it’s the name of the game isn’t it? Without a backpack, I am not a backpacker! So here are a few tips.
For sure, my favourite backpacks are from ThinkTank and MindShift Gear. I have a Backlight 18L from Mindshift Gear and a new black ThinkTank. Both are pictured and linked on there – the best thing about both is their durability! They last for years and I love that aspect to them.
Thermal Clothing
Usually, the higher up you hike, the colder it gets. Maybe odd as you are getting closer to the sun, but especially at night it can get chilly. I had bus breakdowns in San Marino and Turkey and a train breakdown in Romania, so be ready for it. Even put your extra warm clothes in your backpack and wear them when you need them. Gloves, scarves and coats loyal.
Water Filter Bottle
To save carrying around endless bottles of water or drinks on your backpacking hiking trip, carry a bottle which filters out the dirt from natural water. You can use river water and from waterfalls here and not have to backpack the world too heavy.
There are many other little tips and tricks for backpacking the world, but those are a few of my favourites!
“Stepping out to a different world and you might be home late” – Ocean Colour Scene.
All these years of long term backpacking has meant a constant need to change, alter, switch, shift, upgrade to a new, clean, pristine backpack, multiple times. I’ve changed backpacks about 15 times in the last 26 years, since I first studied journalism at Belvoir Tech in Belfast’s Fair City. Those were glory days, and I never once planned this backpacking lifestyle, but I inadvertently backpacked the world since, swallowing so far 218 countries and this means, I’m almost always wearing a backpack!
These days, the stronger, the better, the more durable the backpack, the better but also – the quirkier the better. I love a good backpack with extra quirks, hidden compartments and secret parts to keep all my possessions in. I’ve changed backpacks a lot down the years and haven’t always mentioned them, so here are just 4 of my previous backpacks/rucksacks…before I tell you about my SUPERB new backpack, arguably my favourite yet – The FirstLight® 35L+ From ThinkTank
The ASDA £5 backpack (2009 – 2010)
I am not kidding to say that this one cost me £5. It was part of a £10 bundle in ASDA in Bournemouth in 2009 which contained – 1 blue backpack, 1 blue drinks container, 1 blue pouch, 1 blue toiletry bag, 1 blue utility bag. This was the one I wore while backpacking Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore before winding up in Australia. It appears here…
That backpack eventually got ripped and was out of use by 2010. It really served a purpose but I was a cheap backpacker back then. It was also my carry-on backpack, as I also had two larger backpacks at the same time. After this backpack was binned, I went through 4 more backpacks before getting my Osprey and Mindshift.
The Osprey Aether 70 (2015 – 2019)
This hardcore backpack was part of so many journeys when I used to disappear for months. I still have it, I still love it and I occassionally use it – but only when I’m on a long trip. The last time I used it was in Africa in 2019 when I visited Burundi, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and DR Congo on one trip. It’s still in good condition but long term backpacking has passed me by after COVID. The one below has swallowed 50 countries.
The Mindshift Gear Rotation 180 – Blue (2015 – 2018)
This excellent backpack, the Mindshift Gear Rotation I also still have. It has swallowed around 70 countries and was very durable. The reason I don’t use it much anymore is because of space. It does fit a lot in, but it’s too tight for me now, since I’m hand luggage loyal, and you can get away with a slightly bigger bag than this one.
The Forest Green BackLight®18L From Mindshift Gear (2018-2023)
Having loved the blue MindShift Gear backpack, my next upgrade was to a lovely forest green MindShift Gear backpack. Now let me tell you that this very backpack can tell some stories. I have lost it, it has been stolen, it has been in multiple police stations, it has been to court, it has been to prison and it has also been accused of smuggling drugs to Heathrow. Ridiculous and a lovely colour and remarkably, I still have it and it works, it’s just a bit worn.
And so…my new backpack is the superb black colour, 35 litre…
Here’s the official video of the FirstLight 35L, before I list the specs and my own video and experience having started using it in Summer 2023.
The FirstLight+ backpacks are actually designed for traveling outdoor photographers. However, I ignore all that as they suit me completely as I love the different compartments and I use them for anything – not just photography! So if you are a professional photographer, yes, you will love the FirstLight+ series from ThinkTank, but actually I’m going out of that niche and using this as a travel writer’s backpack! I first debuted this backpack on a trip from Belfast, Northern Ireland to Dublin, Athenry and Galway, Republic of Ireland in June 2023 and now I have it in Poland…
It’s a backpack with a lot of options, as you can see in their video above, and indeed in my own video at the bottom of this article. Built for extended days of travel, the pack is carry-on compatible with most airlines hand luggage *, making it easier to get to your destination without having to put it in hold. The FirstLight’s contoured, 11-point adjustable torso harness fits most men and women, I adjusted it to me quickly and easily. The packs also offer ballistic nylon bottom panels for durability, ample space for long lenses and expandable personal capacity with a dedicated laptop pocket. My books go in the back in compartments along with clothes, chargers and nik naks. The side pockets, I use for water/juice. I put important documents in plastic in one of the outer/rear zippable pockets while I put my rain cover, raincoat, hat and sunglasses in the easy access top or side pockets. There are a lot of options!

I have just started to use my FirstLight 35L and love it so far. Look out for it in my future trips, one of which I will write about very very soon. I’m aiming to hit country 219 next week!! Safe travels!!
Here is a video of me packing my FirstLight® 35L+ in Gdansk, Poland in August 2023:
As I become more and more experienced as a traveller, I also learn what things to pack and what not to pack – what to leave behind. Down the years I made many mistakes when it comes to preparation, equipment, packing etc. It’s all a learning process, a trial and error. You learn from your mistakes in life – it’s a simple as that. These days, having swallowed over 170 countries into my backpack (the latest being Kenya, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo), I fell well equipped to tell you 5 quirky and random travel essentials that you might not know about and that I recommend a lot, especially on long train journeys, overnight buses, nights spent waiting in airport and those unwanted delays…
1.Ponchos
Ponchos are a must for me. They are cheap, small, easy to carry, they take up hardly any room or weight! Yet this little $1 US invention can save your entire body, bag and laptop from getting soaked! Ponchos are really essential and the only time I ever travel without one is when an airline steals my luggage.
2.Travel Mugs
Finding hot tea and coffee can be difficult up in the mountains – so come prepared. By that I mean, firstly bring a travel mug with you on your journey, and second bring some tea bags and coffee sachets! This way, any time you have access to hot water you can make yourself a cup of tea or coffee and stow it away for later! These travel mugs can also be used of course for storing quality energy drinks for hikes, some vitamin drinks like orange juice or even a cheeky beer on your journeys. A quick and easy invention and readily available these days!
3.My Northern Ireland Flag (Fleg)
What some people don’t realise is that I travel everywhere with a Northern Ireland flag. I am a proud Northern Irishman and a nationalist too, so I love to show this flag everywhere I go. The thing is, though, the flag has many many more functions than that and it will surprise you how versatile this flag is! In the past I have used it as:
a scarf
a flag
a towel
a sun protector
a sign (to show where you are)
a beach mat
a cover for when you are changing clothes!
4.Water Filter Bottle
Water is not always clean and there are so many advantages to bringing your own water filter bottle.
you don’t waste plastic as it’s reusable
it’s yours to keep
you never have to pay for water
you never have to boil water
all the water you drink is filtered and therefore safe!
5.Paper and Pen
I’m putting these two together. Real writers are never more than a metre from a paper and pen and this needs to ring true. I love to write and so my backpack always has a working pen (often 3 or 4). This is also so useful in queues at borders for filling in forms, for writing down people’s phone numbers, emails, addresses. In fact, I cannot think of anything much more important than you passport and wallet, than a pen. Plus it is so small and compact and easy for everyone to use!
After losing my wallet in horrendous fashion in 2012 while tubing in Laos, I had to really look after my possessions a lot. Yet down the years, I have managed to lose phones, wallets, cameras and hats – sadly my famous blue hat was also lost in Laos in 2012. Since the Laos disaster, I only had one wallet and it somehow lasted me 7 years. But in March 2019, I finally got a new wallet and for sure, this new wallet is the best I have ever had and the easiest to travel with!! It’s an Allett Wallet and they currently have a cool spring sale on:
The best thing about the Allett Wallets is that they are very small, compact and light. Yet they still hold a lot!! The company claim they are the world’s thinnest, minimalist wallets. I logged onto their site and chose the Nylon ID wallet and I love it already!
If you have followed my stories since this blog’s inception in 2007, then you will probably have seen my varying array of backpacks. I can’t even remember half of the brands I used, from Hello Lulu to a £6 ASDA job to Adidas to the ones that got slashed on a night bus in Colombia, ironically in CuCUTa! Have a look at some of these photos and you’ll see how many different backpacks I really used down the years of that insanic journeython.
So having first used a MindShift backpack in 2015, the Rotation180° Travel Away, I wanted a new backpack as my day pack from 2018 onwards. I still have the Rotation180° Travel Away and I still use it, it’s lasted 3 years and is great but I wanted a change and so I stuck to my loyalty to MindShift.
I opted for the 18 litre Backlight 18L from Mindshift Gear. Already, a few months in and I love it! This is my new beautiful daypack rather than my overland long-term backpacking rucksack (since I have basically not done any backpacking since depression began in 2016). Here are some of my latest backpack’s features and parts of it that I love!
Colour: Forest Green
I love the colour of my new backpack. I chose forest green. Green is my favourite colour and believe it or not this is the first backpack I have had that is green! Can you believe it? It is two shades of green and is also grey and black (in straps and interior). There’s a warmth and happiness in wearing a backpack of your favourite colour. The Backlight 18L is available in two colours, Charcoal and Woodland Green, and meets almost every international airline carry-on requirements. So you can also get it in black.
Flexibility
This backpack has a lot of options and a lot of parts. In brief it has two main sections – the front which is compact, and tight. And then the back which is almost like a suitcase. The front acts as a place for laptop, books, files, keys, business cards, quick access clothes. Thanks to the frontal strap, you can turn the backpack round and open the rear without disconnecting it from your body, it rotates – another special feature of Mindshift products.
The side pockets are perfect to store fast access food and drinks. TWO 500ml bottles of soft drinks (or even a brace of beers) fit in each side pocket, so in theory easy to travel with 4 different 500ml drinks, or a large flask and 2 x 500 ml drinks. So do oranges, peaches etc. – many of them fit in the side pockets. You can also put the rain cover here and easy access important documents (unless of course it’s raining).
The main compartment at the back offers great flexibility. There are separable compartments within it using Velcro straps and dividers. You can use as many or as few of these as you want. This part of the backpack is also well protected and durable. This is perfect for professional photographers.
You can change lenses or just snap a quick photo simply by rotating the bag to the front of your body while the waist belt is still secured. Rear-panel access also adds security when traveling since camera gear is protected from behind.
Back-panel Access There are lots of cool quirks with my new backpack. The back-panel access allows you to work out of the bag without getting the harness dirty, wet, muddy, or icy. Dedicated compartments fit both a 13” laptop and a full-size tablet, places for keys and pens are also included. As a daypack, the pack’s front pockets can carry up to 5 litres of personal gear space for a day’s outing, such as extra layers, a light jacket, food, and more.
Huge Space
Despite looking compact, this backpack has lots of space and when you open the back it even resembles a suitcase. Because of the flexible material and strong zip you can fit a lot in here, the velcro padded compartment can be moved around to suit your needs.
Durability: Strong Zips and Padding
Down the years of backpacker I have had so many backpacks that have broken, got ripped or simply the zip breaks. These zips are the strongest yet, especially the back ones and each zip has two zippers, meaning that even if one does break, you can pull it to the bottom and the other one will still work. Protection and padding is also excellent.
Extra Pockets
I love it when I get a backpack that I keep discovering. In other words there are hidden pockets, extra features and surprises all the time. At the start I didn’t even know about the lower pocket, which can hold the waterproof cover or the frontal pocket which is hidden under a flap.
So far my backpack has been in United States (where I ordered it from), Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Germany, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Belarus and Poland! Not bad for someone who isn’t a hardcore backpacker any more.
So I am enjoying using it and recommend it – it’s a superb item to have. Now you know it’s name, I’ll show you how to buy it. Here are the details for buying the Mindshift Gear BackLight® 18L, which is also available in 26 and 36 litres, but for me the 18 litre is perfect.
As technology advances and I find myself trying desperately to have the newest laptop, a phone that works, a hard drive that doesn’t break and just any device that helps me work faster and easier. I’m always on the lookout for new ideas to try, even though I admit I am usually one of the last to join a trend. I only arrived on Facebook in 2007, Instagram in 2015 and had my first “Clever Phone” in 2013. And then there is the threat of losing items. I have personally left cameras on trains, coats in taxis, keys in nightclubs and phones in bars. In steps Chipolo! Have you seen it yet?? I am now using Chipolo! Their catchline is:
“find your everything”
And this clever device tries to ensure you don’t lose your items as you backpack incessantly. You can read about how it works here.
Attach
Chipolo to anything you don’t want to lose and connect it to the Chipolo app.
Ring
Chipolo from the app or double press it to ring your phone. Even if it’s on silent.
Find
your missing items. The app remembers when and where you last had them. That’s right, it remembers where you were. So if you left your keys on a bus or in a bar – Chipolo knows!
Share your Chipolos
Do you share your car keys with your loved ones? Just share your Chipolo with their Chipolo account and you’ll both be able to track them. So here is the link, get buying a Chipolo and never lose your stuff again:
I checked my hard drive recently, and tried my best to compile all my photos and videos from my journeys into albums on there, it takes a lot of organisation. I will never be able to count, but I’ve probably taken 1,000,000 travel photos in my life. But my expertise is in writing, not in photography. I’m a novice photographer, most of my photos in fact are not great. I don’t post on Facebook or Instagram to get likes on photos, I post to get likes for what I am doing, and for telling my real life story. Quality of photos is totally irrelevant to me. However, with Instagram I often edit my photos on there in size and texture, more recently, Fotor is the best tool I have found online for photo editing. Check out the main Fotor homepage for online photo editing and get ready to explore!
You can also review some features of Fotor in your post based on some topics, such as use Fotor to edit party or travel photos. This is what I thought about, but you can choose the most suitable topic for your readers 🙂
Below are some features of Fotor I recommend:
1.Fotor’s Poster Maker
The poster maker function is a great tool for companies who want a simple and easy poster design, it’s quick to make, has a good range of options, and the completed article, the poster, look excellent. See the feature here: Fotor’s Poster Maker
2.Fotor’s card maker
Fotor’s greeting card maker is a fun and easy way to make greeting cards for friends and family, easily personalised and of course they can be sent directly on email now, or even better, print them on card and deliver them personally. The main link to get started is here: Fotor’s Card Maker
3.Fotor’s photo collage
As someone who hates the nitty gritting of photo editing and putting photo compilations together, Fotor’s photo collage is highly easy to organise. Fotor’s Photo Collage There are different types of collage, including the artistic collage and the funky collage.
4.Simple Photo Tweaking and Editing
My favourite aspect to using Fotor however, is how easy it is to edit and tweak your travel photos. Of course I won’t ever have time to go through all 1,000,000 of my photos but you simply add your photos and use Fotor’s easy to understand user interface to do all sorts of things to your photos – cropping, adding smileys, changing the tone, skin colour, lighting, blurring them etc. There are so many different ways to edit one photo on here!
So what are you waiting for – get onto Fotor straight away and check out this cool and easy to use photo editing website.
Recently I came across a new app called Pepo. After testing it for a while, I would like to introduce it to you today on Tuesday’s Travel Essentials.
I found the Pepo app through its official website – Pepo.com and when I found out that some of my travel friends have been using it for several months now, I really wanted to test it. I am new on the scene!
What exactly is the Pepo App?
Pepo is called by many the new Instagram. It focuses on travel influencers, those with some authority, expertise and influence. As a travel expert, you can share your photos, locations and tips and tricks with everyone who follows your channel. You can also answer any questions your followers might have – from „what’s the weather like in Siem Reap in summer?” to „What’s the cheapest way to travel across Prague?”
As a follower, you can follow different channels of your interests: sport, food, healthy lifestyle or a travel channel that focuses specifically on a certain travel destination, for example New York or Barcelona. So if you’re travelling to a new place and you need an advice, you can leave a comment or ask a question to the expert. He or she will get back to you soon with the right answers. How simple is that?
What I found extremely cool and interesting are the different themes you can use on Pepo as an expert and the follower. Instead of clicking the „like” you are so used to on Facebook, you can click „coffee” and you see the coffee emoji.
My favourite Pepo channels
I am particularly fond of the eTramping channel. Not only are Agness and Cez a Polish travel duo and fellow travel bloggers, but they are also my friends. We met together in Hong Kong and Dongguan, China a few months ago. We had a great time chatting and exchanging travel memories together. Since they are back in Poland, where I’m currently staying, we’re hoping for a Polish tipple with the brace soon!
Agness and Cez regularly share their travel on budget tips on Pepo. Following their channel I keep myself posted on what they do, where they are and what their upcoming travel plans are. For example, Agness has recently shared her tips about the Czech Republic so I knew they finally made it to Prague during their epic road trip.
Find me on Pepo
I set my own Pepo profile up here, now to go alongside my Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube accounts. If you decide to download the app, let’s follow each other and share peace and love from planet earth on our journey!
I look forward to seeing you all on there as this new app takes off and becomes more popular! And don’t forget – it’s free to set up an account!
