Christmas Day was a special time for me when I was younger. Always off school or work, always getting together with the family, always giving and receiving presents. However since I upped and left Northern Ireland a decade ago, my lifestyle of travel has taken over at Christmas. Christmas time for me has seen me visit Hong Kong, Australia, China, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador in recent Christmases. Not to mention South Korea and the DMZ, or indeed my time living in England. However long I live I will probably not better my Christmas Day from 2010.
For on Christmas Day, 25th December 2010 I arrived at the lost city of the Incas, Machu Picchu in Peru. It was a phenomenal moment and a fantastic day. I was aged 30 and this was my best ever Christmas present – arriving at such a wonderful place.
I still contact my family and send Christmas Cards. But giving and receiving presents has taken a back stage now. As a traveller the best Christmas present you can get is to travel safely and happily. This year I will be spending Christmas at high altitude again in the Yunnan Province of China.
I’m like a kid at Christmas all over again! All I want for Christmas is to travel!
Merry Christmas everyone!
