While staying in the Green Forest hostel in Chongqing in China, I heard from a fellow hostel mate Richard, that Chongqing lays claim to the world’s largest toilet complex. Over 1,000 toilets in one building. Well I just had to go there to take a piss…
Where is the world’s largest toilet?
It’s on Foreigner Street which made it into my top 10 sights when backpacking in Chongqing. Although Foreigner Street is an actual street, essentially it’s part of a massive theme park, also called Foreigner Street! This is the place where the world’s largest toilet complex is!
How do you get to Foreigner Street?
Chongqing in China has a surprisingly easy to understand bus system so I got a bus out to it. I was staying in the Yuzhong district. From Zhongxin Lu Street I got a bus heading to the west of the city. It was bus number 315 and Foreigner Street is handily the last stop. It takes about 45 – 50 minutes to get there. The bus costs 2RMB.
What is the world’s largest toilet complex?
Oddly it has a front entrance like the Pharoah in Egypt! Once inside all the toilets on the left are male and all those on the right are female. There are 3 or 4 floors of just toilets!! That’s over 1,000 toilets. To be honest I actually expected more diversity with it and a bit more art. The main room of the gents consisted of just plain white urinals (around 100 of them!) and some holes in the ground.
I wasn’t able to visit the ladies section on the lower floors of course as its gender separated like most toilets. Girls, let me know what they’re like – I heard a rumour the girls toilets were better decorated than the gents.
So if you’re ever in Chongqing, you won’t be short of toilets… It’s open 24 hours by the way.
My videos from visiting the world’s largest toilet complex:
Maybe you should have got in touch with Guiness World Records about attempting to do the world’s longest piss there?

Thanks for your comment Chris! Would love to have a go at that! Safe travels, Jonny
Love how you can hear Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” in the background in the second video. On behalf of all Canadians, I’m sorry! That would certainly make for one uncomfortable piss!
Seriously? Didnt even know that Ray!!! And to be honest you RARELY hear any English/French music in China – its normally only Chinese music so that is really odd!! I actually enjoyed visiting this place as weird as that sounds. Jonny
Honestly, you really don’t notice her singing in the background all that much. But, because I am Canadian, of course I am going to recognize that song! Anyhoo … I don’t think your random China visits sound weird at all. If anything, I am learning more about these places that I’d otherwise would have not know existed. Thanks for sharing! In fact, I just found out earlier today that Chongqing is actually part of the old Silk Road! So, that just makes your journey that much more unique!
Nice one Ray!! I’ve now been to China on 16 separate visits (each of them quite short though – did a lot of long weekends while based in Hong Kong) and each time I’m so amazed by China. Chongqing is AWESOME and you can go all the way to Shanghai even if you get on a boat along the gorgeous Yangtze River. Yes it’s on the Silk Road too, and not too far from Chengdu home of the Panda! Safe travels. Jonny
