Thirsty Thursdays: World Cup Day Out in London, England

I have NEVER written a “look into the future” Thirsty Thursdays on here before but the excitement is building up to this one so I thought I’d give it a try today! It’s just a short post as I’m pretty busy the next few weeks. This is going to be the biggest reunion I’ve organised for a while – all my best mates together for one day!! Yes – we are all meeting up to do a “themed pub crawl” in the city that was once my home, London – England!

Uruguay won it in 1950 in Brazil.

Uruguay won it in 1950 in Brazil.

So I’ll be straight out of Asia into Heathrow, quick breakfast then out to meet the lads for the day. It’s a day that involves a pub crawl theme encapsulating bars or restaurants related to all the World Cup teams that day:

– Costa Rica
– Colombia
– Greece
– Italy
– Uruguay
– England
– Ivory Coast
– Japan

It will be a reunion in London with some of my mates!

During the crawl we will also be playing crazy golf, having a few bets and watching ALL FOUR matches that day. So this promises to be the biggest reunion and thirstiest Thursday in years. I wrote a mini-guide on the day out here, there will be a few surprises to come that’s for sure:

After the crazy London day out, I am off to South America – flights booked. If you’re heading out to Brazil please be sure to book your flight from London in advance though as having checked the prices recently, they have shot up due to the popularity of flights out of Europe ahead of the world’s greatest event, the World Cup.

I will not be posting as regularly as normal the next few weeks due to extended travel, new projects (as ever) and the football but stay tuned – I’ve still got those 1,000 travel stories unwritten…

  • Can’t wait to read up on the follow up to this story! How you plan on hitting up various London bars/restaurants that incorporate all those teams playing in one day, especially Ivory Coast, will be interesting to read! Looking forward to that and the few surprises you have in store for that day. 😉

  • Ha ha thanks Ray – got a lot on my plate at the moment so wont be as many posts on DSL as normal the next 5-6 weeks which is crazy for me, but it has to happen.

Ivory Coast is an easy one to tick off – we have a beer at the ELEPHANT and Castle (as well as being a pub in Toronto, it’s also an area of London).

    Safe travels. Jonny

  • There’s two of them in Toronto. The main location is off Yonge Street near Yonge-Dundas Square, which is not too far away from the Eaton Center Mall and heart of downtown Toronto.

The other location is closer towards the baseball stadium where the Toronto Blue Jays play. After reading one of your first posts on DSL about kicking off your 2007 world tour here, I am assuming you might have gone to that location given that you watched a Blue Jays game that day and the Elephant & Castle would have been pretty close to you.

Either way, it is a great pub! Whenever I find myself in London, I will be sure to check out the real Elephant & Castle! 😉
