Friday’s Featured Food: Haggis, tatties and neeps in Edinburgh, Scotland.
It had been a whopping 6 years since I had been to Scotland when I decided to hit up Edinburgh. It was an easy choice to make for me. Firstly, cheap Ryanair flights made it a budget place to head to but secondly it was a new city. My many jaunts to Scotland had taken me to Glasgow, Kilmarnock and countless visits to Stranraer and Cairnryan.

The capital city of Edinburgh was kept waiting until I was 34. But once I got to Edinburgh, I made up for lost time. I got all the key Edinburgh sights on my agenda – Edinburgh Castle, Easter Road, Scottish Parliament and of course trying Scotland’s National dish – Haggis! I chose to stay in the awesome Baxter Hostel which is centrally located and headed out to hunt down some decent haggis!

It was my first time to try haggis in my life so I headed to a bar in the city centre to try it. I popped in at lunchtime to the Black Rose Tavern and the pub owners were very welcoming and able to cook up this special dish expertly. Haggis is made of sheep and spice basically. It is normally served with tatties (potatoes) and neeps (turnips). I washed mine down with an Innis and Gunn beer – a local brew.

It was so delicious that I ended up eating Haggis twice more on my short 4 day trip to the city.

I’ve always been put off by the idea of Haggis, not sure why as I love Liver and pretty much all other meat. What would you compare the taste too Jonny (If comparable at all)?
Hi Paul – I can’t really compare Haggis to anything and I don’t really have an excuse as to why I had never tried it until I was 34. It’s the most delicious meal I’ve had in years and years and I will do my best to find it in other countries if I can. It’s basically like sheep’s meat and blood with spice I think. It’s just delicious. There’s a Romanian treat I had that was similar and if it wasn’t for the pork, then I’d say Black Pudding is a similar idea. You have to try it! Safe travels, Jonny
