I will hopefully continue to shock you all with my stories from French Guyana, Suriname and Guyana. Seriously, these three neglected countries punch so much above their weight, the opponents are knocked out. If tours and sightseeing were based on global reputation/expectation v. awe then Guyana is world champion. As nobody ever tells me they want to go there yet when you do, you will be so surprised!! You know what, I hadn’t even heard of Sloth Island when I arrived in Guyana from Suriname. And neither have you (come on, admit it).
How to Book a Sloth Island Tour
Use Dagron Tours who are based in Georgetown, Guyana’s capital city. Dagron run loads of cool tours and are completely flexible, friendly and eager to give travellers the best experience during their time in Guyana. I also used Dagron for my Kaieteur Falls tour.
The current price of the tour to Sloth Island is negotiable depending on whether you just want to go there on a day trip or to spend a night there or a few nights there. What I have done further down the post is given the three options for a Sloth Island tour and the full prices and itineraries. Please note that Sloth Island is a private island and you cannot simply just turn up on a boat and visit. Everything has to be booked through Dagron Tours and the Sloth Island website.
Booking Accommodation on Sloth Island
Advance booking is required for day tours and overnight stays at Sloth Island, but Guyana is pretty relaxed and you can book yours the day before normally, as we did. However I recommend getting it sorted in advance especially for the 3 day tour (full tour at the end of this post).
Getting to Sloth Island
The trip to Sloth Island has all the drama of a typical backpacker story, except Dagron tours makes things easier for you. They pick you up at your hostel early morning (we had a 7.30 am collection at Rima Guesthouse Georgetown, Guyana) and you first head to the riverside town of Parika, then get a boat over to the town of Bartica, before the final short boat ride over to Sloth Island.
Alternatively, a 20 minute flight to Bartica/Baganara and 5 minutes boat ride to Sloth island nature resort.
Arrival on Sloth Island
Arrival is magical. We arrive on a small boat on a tranquil beach and are greeted by Ann, who organised the tour. We are offered a welcome drink and to sit down and relax.
Food at Sloth Island
A fully equipped kitchen and electric generators ensure that food is freshly cooked, nutritious and plentiful. The island has its own staff from Falmouth who make you feel at home and cook you the best meals. You might have read about my feast on Sloth Island on my Friday’s Featured Food feature.
The Rooms at Sloth Island
The rooms at Sloth Island are spacious, tiled and have en suite bathrooms with shower. Each room is equipped with the following:
· 1 queen and 1 double bed
· Desks
· Wardrobe
· Clothes horse
· Tables
· Bed-side tables
· Chairs
· Fans
· Paintings and artefacts
Wildlife on Sloth Island
Sloth Island is a relaxing paradise and you are at one with nature. A vast array of animals live here. You can see birds and insects mostly and if you’re lucky, monkeys and sloths. That’s right – Sloths – the animal that the island was named after!
Enjoy 3 days/2 nights in the rainforest on Sloth Island Nature Resort for bird watching and wildlife viewing for sloths and monkeys. Visit the Amerindian village of Falmouth and Parrot Island or simply relax in comfortable hammocks, and swim in the mighty Essequibo River. Here’s a full overview of the tours you can do with full prices.
