My fast and frenzied trip to the republic of Transnistria was over in a heartbeat. Having crossed the border from Moldova on a bus to Tiraspol, I then settled into my home stay for the night with Ilya. Ilya’s flat is in the district of Balka in Tiraspol, the capital city of Transnistria. Homestays should be booked in advance of your trip to Transnistria and you should contact Timo or Ilya to arrange it. Email: [email protected] Tel. 373-68-571-472.
After settling into my home stay Ilya cooks up dinner for my first and only night in the country. It was a bit of an unusual feast and went down well. He cooked up potatoes with garlic butter, onions, carrots and herbs. In the middle of the table, is a plate of sardines. We mix the fish with the potatoes. There are three of us for tea – myself, Ilya and his flatmate Vadim.
It was washed down with a cup of tea and afterwards a local beer as I enjoyed the relaxation here in Tiraspol on my night in Balka before backpacking in Tiraspol and checking out the city’s top 12 sights. So if you decide to head to Tiraspol and want a local experience, please get in touch with Ilya and organise a home stay and ask him for the same meal Jonny had! The next morning I had some local Placinta and Coffee in the local cafe.
