Thirsty Thursdays: Murdering A Poirot Beer🥸༻࿓🍺 In The Agatha Christie Themed “Puaro” Bar, Vilnius, Lithuania🇱🇹

“Those little grey cells” – Hercule Poirot.

In 2015 for the first time in my life, I backpacked through Lithuania, visiting Kaunas, Pažaislis Monastery, Vilnius, Siauliai, Kryziu Kalnas and even the Republic of Uzupis (“the sink is full of fishes, she’s got dirty dishes on the brain” – Noel Gallagher) It was my first time in the Baltics since Latvia away in 2007, and I particularly enjoyed the bars of Vilnius and Kaunas, my bus tour of Vilnius, and doing the Iain “Iain Dowie” Dowie, reminiscing my days of 1993 Teletext or Ceefax watching for Iain Dowie goals…the football in you don’t wane.

The old football stadium where once, Iain Dowie “Dowied”.

In June 1993, Iain “Iain Dowie” Dowie actually Dowies.

I also loved the wacaday Republic of Uzupis, so much so that I wrote some of my books there…it inspired me. Backpacking Centurion Volume 3 – Taints And Honours owes a great deal of its output to the bars of Uzupis.

On that trip I sauntered on into Latvia, then Estonia before swallowing Sweden, Denmark, Christiania and my 99th country was Norway…because at the time I was on route to my 100th country, which would fall on Tunisia. Those were wild and easy times. All my tours and accommodation were sponsored, the blog had passed the gaining traction era, I was engaged to Panny and I was working hard as a professional travel blogger. Who wants to be a Professional Travel Blogger anyway? It made me then ruined me. Depression was a mere chimney corner, away, but I wouldn’t have known that then…

By the time I returned to Lithuania in 2021, life had changed dramtically. I wasn’t engaged any more, I had relocated to Poland, backpacked a further 70 countries by now, up to 170, and it was my first trip abroad for 19 months. Coronavirus had kept me in Poland all that time, where I typed up my book series Backpacking Centurion, the bonus book I Went To Gdańsk With Somebody and my GAWA publication “Champian Stewartnova“. I got a Polish PESEL and NIP and started teaching English again, both online and face to face.

In 2021 in Lithuania I was here to enjoy freedom again, outside Poland, join the GAWA for the World Cup qualifier v Lithuania away. I delved back into the realms of wacaday Uzupis that time, as well as debuting Trakai Castle.

However, something had been missed. I hadn’t done my detective work, I hadn’t used my grey cells… As a kid growing up, I both read and watched numerous Agatha Christie books and thrillers. Including, of course, Poirot. That moustached Belgian Detective. I’d watch him, Agatha Christies, Jonathan Creek and Columbo as a teenager.

Hercule Poirot, Belgian Detective

I once backpacked Poirot’s flat at Barbican in London as well as the Agatha Christie statue in Covent Garden. I even went to Hastings in Barbados!

But I had missed the incredible Poirot Bar at Lithuania Away. Somehow I didn’t even know it existed, and in the end, like many a mystery, I found it by accident, not by Google or Facebook, but by taking the wrong turn when backpacking through Vilnius. Wow! My 2025 birthday trip was when it happened. Time was ticking, of the essence, here I was at Poirot, Puaro!

The wrong turn that led to Poirot…

Located on a textbook poky side street in Vilnius, you might not even notice the Poirot Bar. It’s quaint. It’s everything the Belgian detective would have dreamt up. A pink seat hangs above the door, the logo has a moustache and this is a mysterious thrilligator.

For this timeshell, I’ve spared myself only an hour here. I have a train to Kaunas to catch but I order up a “Poirot Beer” and become emorsed in the beauty of this venue, a fine bar and restaurant! Time to murder it!

A Poirot Beer of course!

A Poirot Beer of course!

The walls are full of Christie quotes, books and images. The menu conjures up curiosities in the head. I myself nicknamed Poirot as “Pernald” for some reason, probably a mispronunciation from my youth or the first time I drank Pernod at Belgium away.

I get my pen out and pen a poem here. I didn’t have time for a book chapter. My poetry will see the light of day sometime, I do have some of it on Jonny Blair.com and Jonny Blair Poetry

There are Agatha Christie books everywhere. I had my own book with me too, Starogard Girl, my latest book which was released in 2024.

More on “The Poirot Bar”

The “Poirot bar” as I moniker it, is actually called Puaro, and it is located in the heart of Vilnius Old Town, Lithuania. It’s a charming Belgian-French restaurant and beer house crafted around the theme of Agatha Christie’s detective Hercule Poirot, with décor and atmosphere inspired by his world .

🕵️ What makes The Poirot Bar “Puaro” special?

  • Agatha Christie ambiance: Every corner nods to Poirot — from vintage posters and subtle detective motifs to a cozy, old-fashioned feel that evokes a 1930s continental café .

  • Cuisine & drinks: They serve Belgian and French dishes—mussels, escargot, mussels in various sauces, ribs and steak frites—and a strong selection of beers, all at a fair price for such a central spot

  • Highly rated: Visitors praise its “soft atmosphere…like in Hercule Poirot time” (Cosmos S.) and call it a “corner of excellent cuisine,” with top marks for food quality and attentive service.

✅ Quick details

🌟 Should you try it?

If you enjoy classic European dining in a setting full of literary flair, Puaro is a fantastic pick. It’s great for a relaxing meal, a beer with atmosphere, or even just poking around as a Poirot-themed curiosity. And of course for writers. I could have sat for hours in here were it not for my pre booked train to Kaunas away.

While here, I find myself drifting in and out of Agatha Christie’s marvellous world. But this is a fast one. I myself aim to catch the 4:17 to Paddington. Well, actually the 18:47 to Kaunas!!

Not the 4:17 to Paddington! The 18:47 to Kaunas

Soon, my mind bell rings and I’ve no time to dwell. I murdered by beer without any witnesses present. And then I’d be on the Kaunas Express, dreaming up wild travel all again. A super bar, and one I felt sad I didn’t dine in, nor dwell longer.
