Thirsty Thursdays: Happy J Pub Crawl – Kiwi Style!!

Jonny Blair partying at the Happy J Pub Crawl
Happy J Pub Crawl – a fantastic night out in Christchurch in New Zealand!

Today my Thirsty Thursdays feature comes from New Zealand. They know how to party there as I found out!! After settling into my new “home for 2 days”, I had noticed a flier advertising a Pub Crawl of Christchurch that very night – there’s one every Friday. The flier was in the visitors guide brochure I had picked up at the airport, and gave you $5 off the crawl, making it just $15. That included pizza, five free drinks, five free entry to bars and a host of people to meet. I didn’t know anyone and was on holiday again, so I had to go for it!

It was the Happy J Pub Crawl. Before I went on the pub crawl however there was one random coincidence that made me laugh. I was ordering a beer and a curry from the bar at Base Backpackers and I hoped to try and lure a few others to come on the pub crawl, so I asked the two guys stood next to me at the bar if they were up for it. They started laughing at me, and I couldn’t work out why! After about 30 seconds one of the guy says to me “We run that pub crawl – its excellent fun!” So I was already in good company.

The two girls from Derby, Helen and Lisa didn’t fancy coming along, but I went along on my own to the start of the crawl – a bar called Iconic. An excellent trendy wee bar. The kiwis know how to party, and I had planned to abstain from alcohol for a while, but somehow the lure of cheap drinks and the best chance to meet new people is often involved round drinking.

In Iconic I had a Golden Monteith’s Ale, and sat down, met the hosts, got my green wristband. It was mayhem already. I met two locals – Laura and Hedley. I was wearing my green Northern Ireland fleece with lots of badges on it – it was now the only coat I had that wasn’t my raincoat, as I packed light and had to leave my two other coats/fleeces behind sadly.

Just before we left the first bar, Iconic I met Pol, from Cork in the Republic of Ireland. It was nice to have a fellow islander on the crawl with me. As soon as we had left the first bar, the organisers crammed everyone round and started singing and doing speeches. It was madness. Where I come from you’d get lifted by the peelers for this type of thing. It was incredible how much you can get away with in a place as distant as New Zealand.

There was a guy on the pub crawl on his stag night dressed as a woman and he got all the dares for the night and made for great craic.

Next up we were back in Saints and Sinners Bar at the hostel I’m staying in, me and Pol collected our free drinks, a Tui pint (not to be confused with Toohey’s which is Australian). We sat at the back and the dance floor was rammed full. I met a Scottish guy who was sat with a Swedish girl, neither were on the pub crawl and we asked the organisers if they could join in, but unfortunately it had already started and they had numbers and tags etc.

This is the pub where it got lively. Everyone started dancing, a bit of flirting was going on, poledancing on the stage and then the organisers invited 5 girls up. They are so funny the Kiwis, once up on stage they shouted to the girls. “First to pop a titty gets a free drink!” and of course one of the girls, much quicker than the rest bared her breast for the male audience.

I later spoke with her, a local lady Sammy-Jo, and I managed to get a photo of her baring her breast. Look closely…

After that we got free pizza before another drinking game involving bursting a ballon by pretending to shag someone up the bum. They actually asked for 5 guys to come up and normally I’d be straight up, but sadly five guys were much quicker, so no free drink this time for me.

We then met an American couple from Montana – Will and Gina. They were so cool, and the accents amazing, they were not part of the pub crawl but everyone was mingling and it was good craic. Soon though time was called and it was off on a leisurely dander till pub number three.

The thrill of which belonged to Malbas, a trendy pub on a corner of a busy junction. There are bars a plenty in Christchurch, on the way to this one we passed at least 10 including a hat-trick of Irish Pubs – how there are more Irish pubs in Christchurch than in Bangor will never fail to amuse me. There was another “queue jump” option to any lady who “popped a titty”, so a few girls bunked in front due to breast baring. A guy who runs the pub crawl shouts all this with a megaphone and we somehow manage to get into every bar no bother despite all this carry on. Where I’m from these antics just wouldn’t be tolerated. That’s the beauty of New Zealand.

I chatted away to Pol and a Kiwi girl Ashleigh in Malbas. The free drink this time was a shot.

I chose a rattlesnake which was lime and tequila. Certainly didn’t want any mucky shots after the previous night in Parramatta. In fact I still couldn’t believe I was coping OK as the previous night had been carnage in the purest sense.

Malbas bar brew their own beer so I then had a Malbas Lager, which was $5.50 and was average. Now that’s how they make their money on the pub crawl, as in each bar they expect you to buy more than one drink, which most people (even me) end up doing.

Turns out Pol was at the same Oasis gig back in 1996, he was a couple of years older than me, but a republican from Cork. Only in New Zealand could you have an orange bastard and a fenian bastard enjoying the best of times together. A lesson to the bigots of yesteryear to ponder on. It would be nice to go back to Cork someday, and meet up with Pol and relive my 16 year old Oasis gig night.

After a touch of dancefloor action it was time for the next bar – number four. On route I picked up a few email addresses from Pol and Ashleigh to add to the contacts list. On route we also had the singing session which is basically everyone repeating what the megaphone dude says!! Including the looney “ppppppppuubbbb crawl” song…

We made it to “The Bog” – a toilet or a marsh meant another free drink and an Irish Rock band.

I had a DB in there and the rock band were called Black Velvet Band and were playing Molly Malone. The dancefloor was rammed and everybody was up jumping. We were having a laugh. Trust an irish pub to bring out that spirit. The previous bar had been dancefloor mayhem, this was pure carnage.

I’m standing at the bar and up and over bounces young Gina – the girl from the states in Saints and Sinners. Her and Will were from Montana, and it was Gina’s birthday.

She had never had Guinness before so I bought her one for her birthday, and one for myself. Turns out her name is Gina G – a throwback to that Old Eurovision Song Contest entry for the UK back in 1996.

I had a real laugh with everyone that night and it seemed to resemble the same night just a year before with the new crew in Sydney. Life had moved on.

Ashleigh got her boobs out.

Gina G rubbed her body against me and we shared a kiss. She kind of came in strutted her stuff, bounced about and then she was gone…

We jived in The Bog to “Ring of Fire” (by Johnny Cash) and notably at the end Twist and Shout (which gave us all a reminder of Matthew Broderick once upon a time in the city of Chicago, the film in question was Ferris Bueller’s Day Off). Clips of “The Bog” dancefloor are included before and for old time’s sake the Ferris Bueller clip. The destiny of the sumptous Gina G was clearly not to stay in my company hence her quick in and outs, this sort of thing happens a lot when travelling.

There was one pub left on the crawl and that was MyBar round the corner. I left separately to most of them and couldn’t get in because I was wearing my tracksuit bottoms, I’d been wearing them al night obviously and nobody had said anything before. If I’d gone in with the crowd they wouldn’t have been noticed but they were. Probably a good thing as I was still recovering from a year’s worth of change in Australia, a night on the tiles in Parramatta and a two hour time difference, not to mention some more drinks and a flight. I popped quickly into one of the Irish Pubs, Mick E Finns had a free glass of water and went to rest my head.

It was pure carnage. It was the Happy J PPPPpppppppub Crawl. Kiwi Style. It was fun. Thanks one and all!! Especially the organisers and the crazy Kiwis. Here’s to an immense night out for my Thirsty Thursdays series!

Thirsty Thursdays: Upper House Hotel: Drinking in One of the World’s Top 5 Hotels!!

Jonny Blair lives a lifestyle of travel and enjoys a posh beer in the Upper House Hotel in Hong Kong
Thirsty Thursdays – having a beer in one of the world’s top 5 hotels – Upper House Hotel, Admiralty Hong Kong! A reunion with Lucan Toh!

As a cheapskate, budget traveller, backpacker etc. staying in hotels is not something I normally do or am used to. So tonight for my thirsty Thursday I thought I would change the scene a bit and talk about the night I was drinking bottles of beer for 80 Hong Kong Dollars each!! Yes, it’s not something I’m used to like I say, but it’s a decent Thirsty Thursday, given that the venue in question is now in the World’s Top 5 Hotels!!

Jonny Blair Thirsty Thursdays epic backpacking trip to a world top 5 hotel!
The epic view over Hong Kong from the Upper House Hotel in Admiralty – Thirsty Thursdays heads to a World Top 5 Hotel!!

To the Upper House Hotel in Admiralty, Hong Kong!! It was October 2011, but the origin of this story dates back to August 1991, 20 years earlier and somewhat of a reunion for this travelling Northern Irishman. I had organised a school reunion you see, on a quick two day trip back to Bangor, Northern Ireland. One man from my Secondary School class posted on Facebook that he couldn’t make the reunion because he would be “in Hong Kong”, well I flew back from Belfast to Hong Kong, did a shift at work and then headed to meet my friend. Just a casual drink and reunion I thought. Enter my old schoolmate Lucan Toh and his high flying lifestyle!!

The Swanky Cafe Gray at Upper House Hotel – who is to say a backpacker can’t do posh!! Upper House Hotel in Hong Kong!

Rather than catching a Happy Hour down the local pub, I met Lucan in the bar in Hong Kong’s swanky Upper House Hotel in Admiralty, on Hong Kong Island. He was staying in this hotel, which has recently been voted in the world’s Top 5 Hotels and is Hong Kong’s number one hotel on Trip Advisor!! The bar was called Cafe Gray.

The travelling Northern Irishman Jonny Blair at the Upper House Hotel in Hong Kong

Well this was exquisite and I was a traveller with my luggage arriving at the posh reception, which had an escalator in it! I was used to staying in hostels NOT hotels, I had no idea that hotels even had escalators!! I had to leave my luggage on the bottom floor at reception, as I was only visiting the bar. Dressed in a shirt and tie for my day job as an English teacher, I probably looked like an odd convergence of a wannabe businessman who backpacked his way to Antarctica!! I guess this travel blog itself is the business side of my travels anyway!

Enjoying the amazing view from Upper House Hotel in Admiralty – an alternative location from my Thirsty Thursdays series.

The beer flowed and I caught up with Lucan who met up with a few of his mates and my girlfriend came and loved the view too! My old school mate Lucan Toh is also a man of the world, now lives in Dubai and runs Toh PR!! It was great to meet him and catch up with him again, whilst also enjoying a few beers in one of the world’s best hotels! The Upper House Hotel is great, oh the free PR I’m giving them! Any chance of a free beer? Go on…I’m enjoying my lifestyle of travel let me tell you!

Halloween freak night in Lan Kwai Fong Hong Kong

Thirsty Thursdays: Halloween in Lan Kwai Fong, Hong Kong

Halloween freak night in Lan Kwai Fong Hong Kong
Today’s Thirsty Thursdays comes from Halloween night in Lan Kwai Fong, HONG KONG.

OK I know it’s not Halloween tonight, but it’s time to get freaked out Asian Style over a few light ales and skeletons. A little unknown tourist gem is that every year on Halloween Night, Hong Kong holds a very special Halloween night. It takes place in Lan Kwai Fong, which is one of Hong Kong’s renowned “pub streets” or “bar districts”. People from all over the world come to dress up and party and the place is packed out! This week’s Thirsty Thursday’s takes us to Hong Kong in Asia!

Jonny Blair in Lan Kwai Fong Hong Kong October 2011
Relaxing in the bright and scary Halloween lights of Lan Kwai Fong in HONG KONG in October 2011.

Despite its British roots, Hong Kong doesn’t cite Halloween or even Guy Fawkes night as any kind of special festival or event, and indeed neither is a holiday. But unofficially it’s one of the best places in Asia to be for Halloween. Lots of happy people, all dressed up, colourful and most importantly drinking and partying to the small hours!! I strongly recommend it if you happen to be in or around Hong Kong on the 31st October.

skeletons in lan kwai fong at halloween
A spooky skeleton hangs down in Lan Kwai Fong’s Halloween Party! The whole street is dressed up for the night.

What’s the deal with it? Basically it’s a kind of un-officially organised event (certainly not endorsed by the Hong Kong government) by bars in the area and everyone knows about it!! Word of mouth spreads round that this small part of Hong Kong Island turns into a frenzy of Superman costumes, evil spirits, ghosts and Rilakkumas on one night of the year. All you need to really do is head there and dress up!!

Hong Kong Brew House in Lan Kwai Fong
Hong Kong Brew House decorated for Halloween Night in Lan Kwai Fong, HONG KONG

Although I knew about the night out, I was sadly busy working on the other side of the city (at New Territories) and when I finally made it over, the party was in full swing and buying an emergency costume amongst the hoardes of crowds wasn’t going to be easy. So I decided to just enjoy it, take some photos, have a few beers and relax! People put a lot of effort into it as do the bars around with their decoration. How shocking that as a backpacker I turned up on Halloween night wearing a shirt and tie! I was probably the least Halloween lookng of the lot. However the term “Gwhylow” is used in Hong Kong to refer to a non-Chinese, white foreigner (slightly racist term I might add) and this kind of translates as “White Ghost” so I ghosted my way into the pub and ordered a pint.

Halloween Night in Lan Kwai Fong Hong Kong
The main street at Lan Kwai Fong on Halloween Night – packed and full of people in fancy dress for a big party.

Drinking wise, as far as a Thirsty Thursday goes, this part of Hong Kong is a haven for the booze hounds! There are over 50 bars, restaurants, clubs and pubs in this small area. My favourites are D26, Hong Kong Brew House and the Whiskey Priest. However one with a decent view over the street is Harrington’s, which at the time was called The Dublin Jack (yes it used to be an Irish Pub and the first Irish Pub in Lan Kwai Fong).

Jonny Blair living a lifestyle of travel at Halloween party in Lan Kwai Fong
Packed street for the Halloween Party in Hong Kong’s Lan Kwai Fong

So I headed to The Dublin Jack (now Harrington’s) for a Guinness and a view over the city. Cocktails followed, all sorts of people came in dressed up and overall it was just a fantastic night. So if you really want a Halloween night with a difference head to Lan Kwai Fong on the 31st October each year (there is also normally a mini-Halloween Night on the Saturday before Halloween in Lan Kwai Fong). Aside from Halloween Night, Hong Kong is EXCELLENT for random nights out and festivals – Hong Kong German Beer Festival and  Top 5 Hong Kong Festivals.

Thirsty Thursdays: Bia Hoi Corner Hanoi, Vietnam

bia hoi corner in Hanoi Vietnam
Bia Hoi Corner in Hanoi, VIETNAM. Perfect place to escape the madness of the city!

Today’s Thirsty Thursday’s takes us to Vietnam and the Old Town of Hanoi, this country’s bustling, noisy, crazy capital city. While Hanoi moves at a hectic pace and there’s little time to breathe, I found myself able to relax any time I wanted to. It’s easy to relax in Hanoi – beers by the side of the street can cost as little as 25 US cents, as I found out!

bia hoi corner hanoi
Typical scene in Hanoi around the many Bia Hoi corners.

The actual Bia Hoi corner itself is famous – all the backpackers head there and mix it up with the locals. While motorbikes and scooters fly by in a city drenched in culture, history and exhaust fumes, sit yourself down on a plastic seat and order an ice cold beer.

glentoran fan in bia hoi corner vietnam
Hanging out at one of many Bia Hoi’s in Hanoi,VIETNAM!

Hanoi does beer, and it does it well! Bia Hoi corner or Bia Hoi junction is easy to find – though where it starts and ends is not always clear as come 5pm this place is heaving with tourists and locals alike. It’s in the Old City’s narrow streets on the corner between P Ta Hien and P Luong Ngoc Quyen. BUT let me tell you a wee secret – you can find beer even cheaper in other similar Bia Hoi corners if you get off the beaten track, just a bit.

bia hoi hanoi vietnam cheap
Escaping the madness of Hanoi in a cheap Bia Hoi, a bit outside the Old Town.

I had 3 nights in Hanoi and drank beers each night in different parts of the city (all within walking distance of the hostel I stayed in). The first night I was drinking with Daeuk from Korea and Hiro from Japan who I met in the Hanoi Backpackers hostel.

jonny blair in Hanoi relaxing with beer
A beer in the hostel with my 2 new friends – nice to introduce but even CHEAPER round the corner in a Bia Hoi!

Daeuk and I worked out that at one point we got 5 beers for $1.70 US!! Now that is amazing and this was sitting out the front of a restaurant in the rain around midnight, on small stools watching Hanoi go by!

Jonny Blair a lifestyle of travel hanoi beer
Hanoi Beer by the roadside at night in Hanoi – travel bliss!

I hadn’t actually expected to like Vietnam for some reason, but I must admit I loved it!! And the price of beer added to it.Especially the amazing Bia Hoi’s and what I loved most was what I would call “world watching”.By that I mean just sitting there with a cold beer, with not a care in the world watching the world go by.

Having a cheap beer in a local Bia Hoi with my travelling buddy Nick from Toronto. Hanoi, VIETNAM!

On my travels, Hanoi is one of the best places to sit and have a beer while watching the world go by. Totally recommended!

What information do you need? – Seriously you don’t need any information on this at all – just turn up in Hanoi and head out to find Bia Hoi corner – you’ll find it and try some of the other local bars a bit further out from the old town for a cheaper beer!

Cafe Batavia in Jakarta

Thirsty Thursdays: Cafe Batavia, Jakarta, Indonesia

Cafe Batavia in Jakarta
Cafe Batavia in Jakarta – great to relax away from the pure madness outside!

Jakarta in Indonesia is just colossal! My visit there last year was a good one. We got around the city a fair bit and were amazed that it has both posh shopping malls and dingy slum markets with huge contrasts between rich and poor. It was undoubtedly our trip to the harbourside slums that stands out as our lasting impression of Jakarta. Just after that it was happy hour and time for a beer. We all know Indonesia is cheap for boozing, but we really wanted to see the famous Cafe Batavia. What is it?

cafe batavia jakarta
Cafe Batavia sits elegantly overlooking Taman Fatahillah in the Dutch Colonial Square.

An elegant bar overlooking the Taman Fatahillah in Jakarta. The Dutch colonised this country and in the Old Town Square (Taman Fatahillah) remnants of that colonialism still remain in the form of Dutch style buildings. The area is known by Kota and is easy to reach by bus from anywhere in the city. We stayed at Hunny Hostel in Harmoni.

slums jakarta football
Playing football with the kids in the slums by Jakarta Harbour.

So after playing football with kids in the slums and generally breathing in the city’s varying odours, we arrived at Cafe Batavia.

cafe batavia taman fatahillah
Street life in and around the marvellous Old Town Square/ Taman Fatahillah with the Dutch style Cafe Batavia waiting shyly in the background…

Cafe Batavia looks as posh as can be. It’s what I would class as a “white elephant” actually. It’s a massive two storey bar and restaurant yet it looked empty and we even questioned whether or not it was open. However, it was happy hour and I was with two of my great travel buddies, Martin from Ireland and Rodrigo from Brazil. If the Irish and the Brazilians can’t enjoy a happy hour drink, then who can? 😉

View from Cafe Batavia
The view over the Old Town Square in Jakarta from the first floor of Cafe Batavia in Jakarta, INDONESIA.

Once inside we decided on a view overlooking the square. The sun was just setting on this mega metropolis and as a traveller I love a beer for sunset relaxing. Once we got upstairs however the place  was rather quiet and the view over the square was decent for a photo opportunity only. We decided quickly to sit at the Old Style Bar and get the Happy Hour beers in. Then I spotted the promotion!

cafe batavia happy hour bargain
Always in for a bargain – 4 bottles of beer for IDR 100,000! Free t-shirt included.

We had been used to drinking Bintangs in Indonesia, however the promotion was on Anker Beer, another local brew which we had yet to try. It was buy 4 get a free t-shirt. It looked like we’d be each having a few beers then! I’m a sucker for bargains and for happy hours. In the end it wasn’t much dearer than in the local bars on Jalan Jaksa where we drank the night before! It was 100,000 Indonesian Rupiah for 4beers so we were in like Flynn.

happy hour in cafe batavia
Cheers in Jakarta’s Cafe Batavia – Happy Hour with Rodrigo and Martin!

The three of us chatted away over a couple of hours. This is a very quiet bar it must be said and perhaps that is a good thing. The madness of the streets of Jakarta are left behind as you drink away inside.

photos in cafe batavia
Cafe Batavia appears to be timewarped. You can relax here away from the madness of busy Jakarta outside.

Cafe Batavia is famous and elegant. It also appears to be time warped, perhaps to the 60s or 70s. The decor is of mostly photo frames, many of which are signed. Some of these photo frames are even from famous people who have had a drink in Cafe Batavia.

bar in cafe batavia
The funky decor bar that we sat at in Cafe Batavia Jakarta, INDONESIA

The decor is wooden, worn, timelocked and interesting. Indeed time stops here in Cafe Batavia, at least that’s how it felt. If time stopped, we had no time to – we got our free t-shirts said our farewells and headed off for a spot of Indianesian Food (yes, really) before a night out.

toilets in Cafe Batavia Jakarta
Even the toilets in Cafe Batavia are worth a look!!

Even the toilets were worth a look – photos everywhere – probably the best toilet I’ve ever pissed in!

I liked Cafe Batavia Jakarta and I was pleasantly surprised by the appeal of Jakarta. Recommended but don’t expect it to be busy!

Where is it? – Cafe Batavia Jakarta, Taman Fatahillah, Kota, Jakarta, INDONESIA

When to go? – Happy Hour for sunset

Price – Not cheap by any means especially compared to some local bars in Indonesia, but worth a beer at least

When did it open? – 1993 (as a bar – the building itself has been around considerably longer of course!)

Thirsty Thursdays: Tibetan Yak Butter Tea in Zhongdian, China

Thirsty Thursdays: Tibetan Yak Butter Tea in Zhongdian, China
Thirsty Thursdays: Tibetan Yak Butter Tea in Zhongdian, China

This week’s Thirsty Thursday takes us to the mountains on the China to Tibet border and is inspired by my recent visit to the town of Shangri La. The most prominent animal in this part of the world is the Yak. A lovable animal to glare at as your bus eases its way through awe inspiring countryside. Come dinnertime however, the tables have turned. In the cold mountains, the drink of choice and a local speciality is Yak Butter Tea.

Thirsty Thursdays: Tibetan Yak Butter Tea in Zhongdian, China
Thirsty Thursdays: Tibetan Yak Butter Tea in Zhongdian, China

I’m a big fan of tea – in fact it’s an addiction. Tea has kept me sane most of my life so when you are in Yunnan Province, particularly in the Tibetan influenced parts, Yak Butter Tea is something you should try.

Thirsty Thursdays: Tibetan Yak Butter Tea in Zhongdian, China
Thirsty Thursdays: Tibetan Yak Butter Tea in Zhongdian, China

Onto the taste. Well it was certainly different and creamy. Yet oddly watery at the same time. It was milky, sweet and it helped digest the food. Not my favourite cup of tea of all time but one that just had to be tried! It’s what the locals drink!

Thirsty Thursdays: Tibetan Yak Butter Tea in Zhongdian, China
Backpacking in Zhongdian, China

I love these travel experiences and being in the Tibetan influenced region of Yunnan was special in itself without this added bonus of some Tibetan food, drink and hospitality. Yes – if you are in Tibet (or parts of Yunnan) then give the Tibetan Yak Butter Tea a try.

Thirsty Thursdays: Tibetan Yak Butter Tea in Zhongdian, China
Thirsty Thursdays: Tibetan Yak Butter Tea in Zhongdian, China

What is it? – Tibetan Yak Butter Tea

Where can I try it? – The best place is Tibet. The second best place is Shangri La in Yunnan Province of China. You can get it at selected other places but the authentic stuff is in the Tibet region.

How much does it cost? – As you might see from the menu above a small pot was 20 Yuan (Chinese RMB). That’s under £2 or $3 so worth it. Mind you I was in a touristy part and I have no doubt that you will get it cheaper. Better still, try your luck with the locals and the monks – they may let you into their world and give you a free sample.

What’s it like? Milky, sweet, buttery and different. The only way to find out is to try it though!

In this region, I also tried Walnut Cakes and visited the magnificent Ganden Sumtseling Gompa, plus we hiked on the Upper Trail Hike, which you can read about in parts 1 and parts 2.

Thirsty Thursdays: Drinking North Korean Blueberry Wine in Seoul

Ordering a North Korean beer in Pyongyang

Officially at least, I made it across the border into North Korea a year ago, the same week that Kim Jong Il died. We did the DMZ tour, crossing the border from North to South in a sky blue hut in Panmunjom. Just before that however, we were able to visit two shops inside the DMZ, both of which sold authentic North Korean products. A few snacks and some alcohol. The first thing I really wanted was a North Korean beer. But alas, they didn’t have any. Please note – I finally tried North Korean beer in 2013 when I visited Pyongyang, writing about the bars of the city, the best sights in Pyongyang and loving my time in the often dubbed “hermit kingdom”.

North Korean alcohol - Blueberry Wine
Thirsty Thursdays – North Korean Blueberry Wine!

So an amazing alternative caught my eye – Blueberry Wine! Authentically made in North Korea. It just had to be tried.

That night after the DMZ tour we had been invited to a house party in the Sincheon area of Seoul, so I opted for a bottle of the Blueberry Wine to take to the party and sample with everyone. If I was rich, I’d have bought a load of the North Korean alcohol just to try.

North Korean blueberry wine
On the bus back to Seoul eager to burst open my North Korean blueberry wine

So fast forward a few hours to the house party. I was very eager to open my wine. I am like a kid in these instances – when I get something new to try. So what you really want to know is – what was it like?

It was absolutely gorgeous!! I couldn’t believe it – we shared it round our group and I loved the stuff, as did most of the others. In fact I don’t think anyone had a bad word to say about it. And with that came the only regret that I didn’t buy some more.

So there you have it – today’s Thirsty Thursday on Don’t Stop Living is about North Korean alcohol – North Korean wine to be exact – or even better North Korean blueberry wine.

Whether it’s authentic or not isn’t really the point here – I enjoyed it and when I visit North Korea properly I will be on the lookout for more!

*** UPDATE just back from North Korea properly this time and can confirm it was authentic Blueberry Wine and it tastes awesome!

Here’s a video i took at the house party trying the amazing North Korean Blueberry Wine:

Guinness Gates in Dublin

Thirsty Thursdays: The Guinness Storehouse, Dublin

gates to the Guinness brewery
The gates to the world famous Guinness Brewery at St. James’s Gate in Dublin, Republic of Ireland

At some point in life I realised that Guinness is my favourite drink. I can’t remember when. My first legal Guinness was in a pub called Wolseys in Bangor, Northern Ireland. My first trip to the Guinness Brewery in Dublin was in 2003. But earlier this year I decided it was time to head to the world famous Guinness Brewery and Storehouse at St. James’s Gate once again! It hadn’t changed in the 9 intervening years. In other words, it was just as good!

Yes, there is a price for the tour and you’ll need to pay it. I was there in April 2012 and it cost me 14.4 Euros. Guinness is a world famous drink and this is not only a detailed tour of a brewery, it has an amazing 360 degree view over Dublin from the fantastic Gravity Bar. Plus you get a pint of the freshest Guinness you’ll ever get – included in the price of the entry and you can claim your beer (stout) on the top floor. I’m a budget traveller of course, BUT some things are just worth paying for and this is one of them. Besides, you can walk around the city centre of Dublin for free and see plenty of other sights such as Temple Bar, the Liffey, Molly Malone statue, O’Connell Street etc. So open your wallet and pay it.

The museum part of the Guinness Brewery
The museum and history part of the Guinness Brewery is worth spending time in

Once inside you should try and get an understanding of the history of Guinness and the brewing process. The museum part scales a couple of floors and you can easily spend a couple of hours in there – mind you I was thirsty and I love the view from the top!!

Pouring my own Guinness at the Genius Bar
Pouring my own pint in the Guinness Genius Bar and Academy. Probably the 50,000th one I’ve ever poured!

There is also the option of pouring your own pint – if you do this you get to drink it – so another free beer! I went in and was “shown” how to pour a pint. I then turned round and said to the guy that I’d been working in pubs for over 10 years and I had poured Guinnesses in 3 different continents!! He probably gathered that by the ease at which I poured my pint.

"Everyone's Irish on March 17th"
Quirky wee quote in the Guinness Storehouse – “Everyone’s Irish on March 17th” (also known as St. Patrick’s Day by the way!

Relaxing in the Gravity Bar in Dublin
The Gravity Bar is one of the best bars I’ve been in!

The best part of the Guinness Storehouse is without doubt the Gravity Bar. I’d actually cite it as one of my favourite bars in the world to be honest!!

Guinness settling at Gravity Bar Dublin Ireland
The freshest and nicest Guinness you’ll ever have is in the Gravity Bar, Dublin, Ireland

To give you an idea of my personal recommendations, then if you are in Dublin – GO to the Guinness Brewery – whether you like Guinness or not is not an option. This would be like saying you don’t want to see Machu Picchu because you don’t like architecture. It’s a touristy thing and it’s unthinkable to head to Dublin and miss it. If you have say two hours only in there – then I recommend spending your time as such:

– 45 minutes in the Gravity bar relaxing, having your Guinness and enjoying the views

– 15 minutes browsing the Guinness Store (a shop of everything branded Guinness – it’s not cheap but you can get Guinness on almost anything!!)

– 45 minutes in the museum/history section reading all about Guinness

– 15 minutes in the Genius Bar/Guinness Academy pouring your own pint

Guinness Gates in Dublin
At the Guinness Brewery and Storehouse – St. James’s Gate, Dublin

I love Guinness and it continues to be my one internationally consistent alcoholic drink. I’ve tried it in every continent except Antarctica and it always tastes great. I just love it – a pint of it on an evening and I’m a happy travelling Northern Irishman!

Guinness and Lonely Planet
All you need to travel in China!! Guinness and a Lonely Planet Guidebook!!

I did China again last month and I did it with a tin of Guinness! Here’s a few random facts about Guinness:

– Nigeria is the largest Guinness drinking nation in the world

Guinness is not black – it’s dark red. Have a look next time you get a pint!

– Arthur Guinness signed a 9,000 year lease for the land where the brewery is at St.James’s Gate. A worthwhile investment!
